for World Mayor 2005. In June, City Mayors will publish its shortlist
of 50 mayors from across the world. The winner of the 2005 World
Mayor prize will be

2005Between
now and the end of May, London-based City Mayors is seeking nominations
for World Mayor 2005. The annual World Mayor event, which was last
year won by Tirana Mayor Edi Rama, aims to raise the profile of
mayors worldwide, as well as to honour those who have served their
communities well and who have made contributions to the
well-being of cities nationally and internationally. City Mayors
Publisher Tann vom Hove said: “We are looking for mayors who
have shown that they have the vision, the passion and the skills
to make their cities amazing places to live in, to work in
and to visit.” The most outstanding mayor of 2005 will be
presented with the World Mayor award.

The competition,
which is conducted on the internet, takes place over two stages.
Between now and the end of May, City Mayors are inviting nominations
from across the world. Tann vom Hove said: “Everybody with
an interest in cities and local government can put forward a mayor
for the World Mayor 2005 title.” After the closure of the
nomination stage, City Mayors will draw up a short list of 50 finalists
who will compete for the 2005 award. Each of the finalists will
be asked to submit a manifesto, detailing his or her achievements.
This year’s theme is
‘Cities on the international stage.’ The finalist mayors
will be invited to detail how they market their cities internationally
and how their cities cooperate and compete with other cities.
More than 300
mayors from North and South America, Europe, Asia as well as Africa
have already been nominated. Among them are Gavin Newsom (San Francisco,
USA), Martin O’Malley (Baltimore, USA), Richard Daley (Chicago,
USA), Hazel McCallion
(Mississauga, Canada), Andrés Manuel López Obrador
(Mexico City), Luiz Paulo Vellozo Lucas (Vitória, Brazil),
Bertrand Delanoë (Paris, France), Dora Bakoyiannis (Athens,
Greece), Walter Veltroni (Rome, Italy), Ken Livingstone (London,
UK), Tadatoshi
Akiba (Hiroshima, Japan), Naimatullah Khan (Karachi, Pakistan) and
Arkebe Oqubay (Addis Ababa, Ethiopia).

The winner of
the 2004 award was Edi Rama, Mayor of Tirana. He succeeded in changing
the Albanian capital from a shabby post-communism city into a vibrant,
colourful western European community.
